6. Measuring Procedure

Here is how I do the actual measuring on my dog.

1. Let the dog lie down. Prepare a piece of paper towel, the meter, the test strip, and the lancing device.  When the test strip is set to the meter, you must get the blood sample within a certain time limit (a few minutes), or the device will report an error. Make sure you prepare everything in advance, since everything must go quickly once the strip is set.

2. Set the test strip into the device, and pull the lancing device to get ready.  I use the Number 3 level on the lancing device.

3. Wipe a section of the gum dry with a piece of paper towel.  This helps make the blood bubble, instead of running down. This step is especially useful for a larger breed dog, as they tend to drool more. The meter sometimes inaccurately displays a very low glucose level when the blood mixes with mouth water.

4. Use the lancing device to get the blood bubble.  Push the lancing device after the shot to get enouch blood.

5. Touch the test strip to the blood bubble. Wait until the meter makes a beeping sound. One tip here is to touch the edge of the test strip to the very top of the blood bubble, so that the blood does not run.

6. Read the meter and record the result. I usually measure again if the meter shows a very low number. (This happens sometimes if the mouth is too wet.)
